Staying Active in the Summer Heat

With the temperature rising in the summer months some may be less motivated to be active outdoors. There are many fun ways to beat the heat and meet your movement goals! Right in your own yard or in your community, gardening is a fun way to get outside. Build your own garden or volunteer at your local community garden, plant seasonal vegetables, and get in some activity sowing your garden.

Take a bike ride to your local farmers market or go to a “pick your own” farm and walk around! If you drive there, park farther out and get those extra steps in. This is a great way to check off a healthy activity and eat healthier foods. When you go shopping, take advantage of the indoor space at the mall for a walk.

There are many great hiking trails in New Jersey with a nice canopy cover of trees to forest bathe in and keep you cool. You can even take a nice trail walk to the many waterways to go kayaking or canoeing. Paddle out to go fishing or take a class in stand up paddle boarding (SUP).

Yoga class is a great way to improve your core, strength, flexibility, and mind. Classes are offered indoors and outdoors. Summer festivals are abundant and another way to get out and move around whether you are just walking the festival grounds, playing carnival games, or dancing to the music! Last but not least, SWIMMING! The water is a great, low-impact on your joints way to exercise while staying cool.

Always remember to stay hydrated to beat the summer heat!
